Bridge Companion Bookstore Online and Test Your Stayman
Bridge Companion Bookstore Online
I am often asked to recommend books for bridge players. There is no shortage of books
available, but not all are worthwhile. The Bridge Companion website now has a bookstore
with all of my reviews and recommendations. As an associate you get the dependability and
security of amazon.com. To review the books I suggest simply go to the Bridge Companion
website and click the easy link to the Bookstore area. There are bridge
books for fun, bridge books for beginners, and bridge books for the more advanced player.
These books make great gifts as well.

Test Your Stayman
This brief is an excerpt from an article that first appeared in Issue #19 (Jul/Aug 1997)
of The Bridge Companion.
Instructions: Match every hand from the West pool with every auction that it fits. Match
every hand from the East pool with each auction that it fits. Some hands may fit more than
one auction. For a review of Stayman consult Issue #3 (Nov/Dec 1994).

Answers
1 - The West hand is a minimum (16 to 17-, passed the invitational 2) without 4
hearts or 4 spades (2
response to Stayman). The East hand is invitational (8-9
points) with 5 hearts. The 2
rebid shows continued interest after West has denied holding
4 hearts.
West: CDF East: F
2 - The West hand is minimum with 4 hearts (did not accept the 3 invitation).
The East hand is invitational with 4 hearts and could still have 4 spades.
West: EGH East: AF
3 - West is maximum (17+ to 18) with 4 hearts and 2 or 3 spades. East is invitational with
4 spades and without 4 hearts.
West: A East: C
4 - West is minimum or maximum and has 4 hearts but not 4 spades. East has 10-14 points
and 4 spades without 4 hearts.
West: AEG East: G
5 - The West hand is maximum with 3 spades and 2 or 3 hearts. The East hand is
invitational (8-9 points) with 5 spades.
West: F East: H
6 - The West hand is minimum or maximum and has 4 hearts. West may also hold 4 spades.
East has game values (10-14) and 4 hearts.
East may also hold 4 spades.
West: AEGH East: BDE
7 - West is minimum or maximum and does not have 4 hearts or 4 spades. East must have 6
hearts (to be certain hearts is correct). Why Stayman? East must have 4 spades also.
West: CDF East: E
8 - The West hand is minimum or maximum and has 3 spades and 2 hearts. East is game going
(10-14) with 5 hearts.
West: F East: D
Thanks!
